The Cinque Terre is situated on the Italian Riviera, the Liguria region of Italy, to the west of the city of La Spezia. Cinque Terre (Five Lands) is the result of the rocks pressure during thousands of years. The erosion of the water has created hundreds of bays and small creeks.
Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, Riomaggiore are Cinque Terre. The terrace cultivations are characteristic of the five villages, built on narrow ribbons on the sea, defined by an unthinkable number of dry-laid stone walls. Today is not easy to reach the Five Lands by car and the train is the best means of transport. Paths, trains and boats connect the villages, and cars cannot reach it from the outside.
The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Did you know that the National Park status allows the villages and their habitants to:
keep cars and motorbikes out of the villages, close walking paths when numbers become too great, get free health screenings, natural medicine, subsidised child care and a free shopping service for the elderly.
Good to know: The Cinque Terre’s restaurants and its few hotels tend to close from around November to March or April.
Here is a very good explanation on how to get there as well as a little more insight for each one of the 5 villages.
