Today we’ve picked up an amazing deal from Singapore. We’ve heard that Singapore’s nightlife is fascinatingly wild, so we really want to tell you about Singapore Night Safari.

The Singapore Night Safari is like Zoo but better…way better! This place offers an unusual glimpse into the nocturnal animal kingdom, with more than 59 exhibits and 1,000 animals to be seen.

Here, you can see exotic and often endangered species such as the Himalayan griffon vulture, greater one-horned rhinoceros, wildebeests, gazelles, giant anteater and the gaur (wild cattle) of Burma.

Start with the Creatures of the Night Show for a good 20-minute overview of the animals to be seen here, then move on to the Himalayan Foothills via tram to see bharal, Himalayan tahr, mouflon and markhor traversing the rugged terrain.

Next, the tram heads to the Neplaese River Valley, featuring a large sambar (deer) habitat as well as golden jackals, pelicans and the greater one-horned rhino.

Going across the Indian Subcontinent, look for the sloth bear, striped hyena, barasingha and Gir lion. Further along is Equatorial Africa with its giraffes, lions, servals and bongals in a landscape resembling the great savannah grasslands.

The diverse habitat of the Indo-Malayan Region has Malayan tigers and babirusas, while the Asian Reverine Forest features tapirs and elephants.

Scholarship: travel for free and write about Southeast Asia

If you want to be a published travel writer, here is your chance! The contest launched by Rough Guides will offer you the possibility to travel for free in 3 different countries in Southeast Asia: experience the culture and local secrets in Singapore,  explore a whole different side of Bali and taste the Malaysian cuisine at its very own home.

You have to be available between 18 June – 6 July 20012, to be comfortable travelling solo and, surely, to love writing about travelling. It sounds fascinating, I know, and it will definitely be, but keep in mind that you’ll also have to work…for real.

Write stories and reviews at the end of each day, regardless of how knackered you may be, discover new places, meet locals and learn about their culture and traditions, and then translate everything in engaging words for those tourists eager to experience unknown, virgin places.

Your assignments with Rough Guides won’t be easy, but they will certainly throw you in the middle of the action. If you are a nomadic spirit, willing to become a published travel writer, you can’t ask for a better opportunity.

What you’ll need to produce

Along with your work on the ‘Rough Guide to Singapore’, you will be required to keep a daily travel journal on WorldNomads.com (no less than 200 words per daily entry) to share your adventures through Southeast Asia. Your journal should be completed no later than two weeks from returning from your trip.

Who can apply

  •  This opportunity is open to students, emerging and non-professional writers and lovers of travel looking for a career change.
  • The scholarship is open to all nationalities, however, you must have a high degree of proficiency in written English.
  • The opportunity is designed to give you a taste of what it’s like to be a travel writer on the road, so you must be comfortable doing some travel on your own.
  • Minimum age 18 by the date the scholarship application close (April 23, 2012)
  • A current passport with at least six months before expiry
  • You must be available as per the dates set out. Please note these dates are not changeable in anyway, you must be available for the entire assignment.
  • You should be an exceptional writer with a lust for adventure travel, a desire to experience new cultures (and eat them!)and above all, a burning desire to become a professional travel writer!

Entries close April 23rd, 2012 at 2pm AEST (UTC +10). All your travel and living expanses will be covered by the organizers.
