Visit the tulip fields in The Netherlands

Both pictures by Allard Schlager. Here and here.

Maybe you already know that I am living in Amsterdam, The Netherlands at the moment. The country of tulips.         And the tulip season just kicked off. One place you have to visit is the Keukenhof.                                                          Keukenhof (“Kitchen garden”), is situated near Lisse, The Netherlands and and is the world’s largest flower garden. Approximately 7 Million flower bulbs are planted annually in the park, which covers an area of 32 hectares.

The fields are stunning and will overwhelm you with colours, tulips in colours you would never have imagined.

It is not far at all from Amsterdam and absolutely doable as a day trip with lots of bus and train trips offering packages. Check out the website to find a list of possibilities or how to get there by car.

Note: Keukenhof is open annually from the last week in March to mid-May. The best time to view the tulips is around mid-April.

For 2011: Keukenhof is scheduled to be open from 24 March to 20 May 2011. The Flower Parade is scheduled for 16 April 2011.

  2. Hi there, My wife, Jean, and I spent a couple of days at Keukenhof Gardens, near Lisse. We always knew that The Netherlands (Holland) was famous for its tulips. As gardeners, seeing the gardens at Keukenhof, just simply took our breath away! It was amazing. Without a doubt, Keukenhof Gardens is the world’s biggest outdoor gardens. For those who might like to see some pictures from our trip, they are at:

While in Holland, Jean and I also spent a day at the village of Zaanse Schans where we got to see their large collection of windmills. For us, a trip to Holland just wouldn’t have been complete without seeing windmills in action. If anyone would like to check out the variety of windmills that we saw, they are at:
